30 Oct: Flash Player memory differences per browser

    posted by: martijn, at 30 October 2007 8:33 GMT+1, 7 January 2008 22:00 GMT+1

I'm currently working on a project which has to load a bunch of images and videos.
Because the performance of the application was decreasing when loading 50+ files I made a component to monitor the memory. The results are very strange:

    • Standalone Flash Player (FP)  takes 60 MB of RAM
    • FP + Firefox 80 MB
    • FP + Opera also 80 MB
    • FP + IE6 20 MB

This test is not to accurate but the differences are so big! Could it be that the garbage collector of the ActiveX plugin is superiour to the Netscape plugin? But why is the Standalone FP so different?

If I have time I want to make a better test enviroment because I want to know where the difference are being created.

Update: These measurements are created with flash.system.System.totalMemory if I monitor the TaskManager all the browser are equal (180 / 220 MB).

But why are the differences so huge? Firefox consumes 4 times as much as IE. I used the flash.system.System.totalMemory method, if I monitor the TaskManager the usage of memory is equally (I will add this to the article)

I think there is a simple explanation - each plugin-container permits the usage of a certain amount of memory and cpu for the plugin loaded. If the active memory reaches the pre-allocated size, garbage-collection is triggered. So what you can see is actually the memory-size the browser/plugin-host gives the plugin.
