The year of the browser they call 2008.
Firefox 3 (gecko+tracemonkey), Chrome (webkit+v8), IE 8 (mshtml) are coming or are already landed.
Also Flash 10 is coming + Silverlight 2.
Instead of calling it a browser war I suggest to call it a technology war because all these technologies are compared with one and another.
The javascript boost V8 and Tracemonkey are promising could be nice but the language is still a little weird and IE is still the biggest player which is not delivering the same speed. Therefor developing an application with javascript and gaining from the power of V8/Tracemonkey is not an option.
Flash and Silverlight both are strong players from the developers point of view with nice tooling and solid scripting languages. And both plugins can be cross platform (although I doubt Silverlight and Moonlight, the Linux version, are ever equal at the same time).
If we lay out the figures of usage of browsers and plugins in one list (not based on a source, just rumors):
| Flash | 98% |
| Internet Explorer | 80% |
| Firefox | 20% |
We see that Flash is still the big winner and I think this is not going to change soon. I wish the market share of IE drops (which is) and the market share of the other players (Safari, Chrome, Firefox, Opera) grows. Ohh and Silverlight... well it has a big developers share but I think it’s lacking the designers share and therefor it will fail in comparison with Flash.
I thing javascript and Flash just should be friends and gain from each others strong points. And the choice of technology must be based on the audience you are targeting. You cannot see Flash content on an iPhone for example (hopefully this will be different in the future).
